A scandal erupted in Tashkent over unauthorized repairs to the 'Blue Domes' (Golubye Kupola), one of the most iconic monuments of Tashkent modernism. Now, the complex is set for a large-scale scientific restoration.

According to the Cultural Heritage Agency, the site was inspected by the agency's first deputy director, Elmurod Nazhimov, and the project's author, renowned architect Vil Muratov, who designed the café built between 1968 and 1970.

Over years of use and repairs, the complex's appearance changed: mosaic elements were partially lost or altered, compromising the original architectural concept.

The main goal is to restore the original design using archival materials and international heritage preservation standards. A working group will be formed, including foreign modernism experts and leading Uzbek architects and restorers such as Yekaterina Golovatyuk, Boris Chukhovich, and Fatima Abdurakhmanova.

Experts will carefully recreate the historical appearance, from mosaics to artistic details, preserving the unique blend of national motifs and modernist architecture that makes the Blue Domes special.

The Blue Domes complex is considered a prime example of Uzbek modernism. In 2019, it was included in the National List of Immovable Material Cultural Heritage Objects and is under state protection. The restoration is expected to set new standards for preserving 20th-century architectural heritage.
