The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will allocate €20 million to support pharmaceutical production in Uzbekistan. The funds will be used to modernize and expand the capacities of two pharmaceutical companies, aiming to increase the share of domestically produced medicines in the local market.

According to the EBRD press service, the loan has been provided to the Uzbek-British manufacturer Samarkand England Eco-Medical (SEEM) and its partner company Bayan Medical. These enterprises specialize in producing intravenous solutions, generics, and other medicinal products in various forms.

Using the attracted funds, SEEM will purchase new production lines for antibiotics in ampoules, syrups, nasal sprays, suppositories, and ointments, while Bayan Medical will upgrade equipment for ampoule production. The project is expected to promote import substitution, as currently about 75% of medical products in the country are imported.

The EBRD noted that Uzbekistan has been the largest recipient of its investments in Central Asia for six years. The bank's total portfolio in the country exceeds €5.8 billion across 205 projects.
