Tashkent, Uzbekistan – AN Podrobno.uz. Uzbekistan is proposing to reduce the list of grounds for lowering the marriage age from 18. Only two cases are planned to remain: pregnancy or childbirth.

The corresponding amendments have been prepared to the Family Code. This was announced at a Senate meeting by Deputy Prime Minister and Chair of the Committee on Family and Women, Dilnoza Kattakhanova. According to her, the draft law has already been submitted to the Presidential Administration.

Currently, legislation allows lowering the established marriage age by no more than one year also in the case of declaring a minor fully capable. This norm is proposed to be excluded.

In addition, for persons under 18, an automatic ban on submitting a marriage registration application through the platforms "Adliya+" and MyAdliya.uz is planned. Applications can only be submitted after the hokim (local governor) makes a decision to lower the marriage age.

According to Kattakhanova, since the beginning of 2026, 348 early marriages have been prevented in the country. Earlier, Uzbekistan introduced additional measures to combat early marriages. They provide for new mechanisms for their identification, increased liability, and support measures for young families entering their first marriage after both spouses reach 21 years of age.
