Over the past thirty-five years, marriage and family formation trends in Uzbekistan have experienced significant fluctuations. According to data provided by the National Committee on Statistics, the republic recorded 270,300 marriages back in 1991. However, by the year 2000, this figure dropped sharply to 168,900, marking the lowest recorded level for the entire period under review.
The demographic landscape began to shift in the early 2000s, leading to a steady recovery in the number of unions. By 2005, the registry offices recorded 184,000 marriages, a number that surged to 292,300 by 2010. The upward trajectory continued, culminating in a historic peak in 2018 when authorities registered 311,400 marriages nationwide, followed by another robust figure of 305,200 in 2021.
Despite previous highs, recent years have revealed a continuous downward trend in formal marriage rates across the country. In 2022, the number of registered marriages fell to 296,700, dropping further to 283,800 in 2023 and 271,800 in 2024. By the close of 2025, the figure declined even further to 267,100, slipping slightly below the baseline level recorded back in 1991.
During the first six months of the current year, official agencies registered 92,300 marriages, with final annual statistics slated for release at a later date. Meanwhile, local observers note an interesting demographic sidelight, as nearly 700 women in Uzbekistan chose to tie the knot after turning 50 years of age.
