The Tashkent metro system is reportedly continuing its rolling stock renewal efforts to cope with a substantial increase in passenger traffic across the capital. According to statements made during a recent press briefing dedicated to the development of the underground network, the number of active train sets has risen from 40 units prior to 2021 to 55 units currently. Furthermore, authorities intend to procure an additional 14 modern five-car train sets by the year 2027.

The pressing need for fleet modernization is directly attributed to a dramatic spike in daily ridership. While the subway system purportedly handled between 280,000 and 300,000 passengers per day in 2021, this figure has allegedly surged past 1.2 million by 2026, placing immense operational pressure on the urban transit infrastructure.

Officials claim that acquiring extra trains will help improve service standards, enhance travel comfort, and facilitate further reductions in train headways. Previous updates noted that intervals on the Chilanzar line were cut from five to 1.5–2 minutes, the Uzbekistan line from six to three minutes, and the Yunusabad line from 11 down to four minutes.

Looking further ahead, the long-term development strategy envisions expanding the Tashkent metro network to 79 stations by 2030, extending total track length to 103 kilometers, and pushing daily passenger volume up to 1.8 million people.
