President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree titled "On Additional Measures to Reduce Water Loss in Irrigation and Prevent Water Scarcity." This document aims to enhance the efficient use of water resources and address the water deficit observed in the country, which poses challenges to agricultural and environmental sustainability.

According to the decree, channels with a total length of 389 kilometers in the Ministry of Water Resources system, where high water losses are noted, will be reconstructed and concreted. These works are expected to result in annual savings of approximately 206 million cubic meters of water resources and 26 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

The project will improve water supply for 158.4 thousand hectares of irrigated land and implement measures for the rational use of water resources under conditions of scarcity. For these purposes, 600 billion Uzbek soums will be allocated from the exceeded portion of the republican budget revenue forecast for the first quarter of 2026.

Of the allocated funds, 480 billion soums will be directed towards concreting channels and irrigation networks, while 120 billion soums will be used for activities related to preventing water scarcity. These measures are part of broader efforts to mitigate the impacts of water shortages and support the nation's infrastructure development.

Previously, Kun.uz reported on measures to modernize Uzbekistan's water management and combat water resource deficits. The new decree continues these initiatives, focusing on practical steps to alleviate water-related challenges in the region.
