Thai authorities are revising their visa policy, cutting the visa-free stay period in half and tightening border controls. The new rules will also affect tourists from Uzbekistan, for whom Thailand remains a popular destination.
The tightening of immigration control and reduction of the stay period for foreign tourists from 60 to 30 days was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeo.
According to him, the current regime, which allows stays of up to 60 days with a possible 30-day extension, has been deemed too lenient. The authorities believe it creates conditions for abuse, particularly by individuals without tourist intentions. The primary focus is on combating online fraud and activities that pose security threats.
Along with reducing the stay period, border checks are to be intensified. Immigration services will more thoroughly assess the purpose of visits and the alignment of declared plans with the visa type.
For citizens of Uzbekistan, these changes mean a potential reduction in the time they can stay in the country without additional permits. Thailand traditionally attracts tourists from the region due to its affordability, developed infrastructure, and visa-free conditions, so the new restrictions may impact tourist flows.
However, authorities emphasize that the new measures are not targeted at specific countries but are intended to ensure the security and transparency of migration processes.
Earlier, in July 2024, Thai authorities expanded the visa-free regime to 60 days for citizens of 93 countries. However, the course is now shifting towards stricter entry controls.
