A group of 112 Nobel laureates has called on the Iranian regime and the international community to release imprisoned human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, citing her deteriorating health, The Guardian reports.

In a joint statement released on May 12, the laureates demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

On May 10, Mohammadi was rushed to Pars Hospital in Tehran in critical condition. According to her representatives, the activist has lost significant weight while in detention and suffers from unstable blood pressure and serious heart problems. She was found unconscious in her prison cell before being hospitalized, allegedly after suffering a heart attack.

“Medical experts warn that her life may be in danger,” the Nobel laureates’ statement said. “She has been denied specialized medical care for several months.”

The appeal was signed by 26 laureates in chemistry, 12 in economics, 5 in literature, 29 in medicine, 11 in peace, and 29 in physics.

Mohammadi, 54, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all.” The Iranian regime has arrested the activist multiple times since 1998. She has opposed the death penalty and mandatory hijab laws. Her combined prison sentences total more than 44 years. In February 2026, Mohammadi was sentenced to 7.5 years for conspiracy to commit a crime and anti-government propaganda.
