Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov defeated German grandmaster Vincent Keymer in the seventh round of the Super Chess Classic Romania tournament in Bucharest, securing his first classical chess victory since the Candidates Tournament.
Playing with the white pieces, Sindarov gained an advantage in the opening and capitalized on Keymer's mistake, delivering a decisive blow on move 30. Keymer had been leading the tournament standings, but the loss cost him the sole lead.
According to Chess.com, Sindarov played 'legendary' chess in the first half of the Candidates but slowed down in the second half, winning only one game. In Bucharest, his winless streak had reached 10 games before this victory.
Sindarov said he anticipated Keymer's choice of the Tarrasch Defense and 'didn't prepare much.' The game was heading for a draw when Keymer made an inaccurate bishop move, landing in a difficult position.
'Finally, I'm very happy with a good game. Today I really showed beautiful chess – I calculated a lot!' Sindarov said after the win.
The victory reshuffled the standings. Keymer, Fabiano Caruana, and Jorden van Foreest now share the lead with 4.5 points each. Sindarov is tied for 5th-8th place, one point behind the leaders.
Sindarov also noted that his opponents have an advantage, receiving an extra rest day before playing him. This is due to Alireza Firouzja withdrawing from the tournament after playing only two games.
In round eight, Sindarov faces Jorden van Foreest, followed by Wesley So. To keep his chances for first place, he may need to win both remaining games.
