In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a sharp increase in detected Ebola cases has been recorded after the expansion of surveillance in the outbreak zone — more than 900 suspected cases, including 101 confirmed.
According to the World Health Organization, the main hotspot is in Ituri province, where the situation is complicated by active population movement.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that medical workers' efforts are hindered by the unstable security situation — due to escalating violence, not only locals but also doctors and humanitarian workers are leaving dangerous areas.
The Bundibugyo virus, a strain of Ebola, is the most widespread in the region. WHO has declared the outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, though the global risk of spread is assessed as low.
Earlier, it was reported that developing a vaccine against the new strain could take up to nine months, as no ready-made vaccine for mass use is currently available.
