Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sent a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump requesting increased deliveries of air defense systems, citing a growing shortage of weapons to protect against Russian missile strikes.
According to The Kyiv Independent, the Ukrainian leader warned of a “deepening shortage” of air defense systems and asked for additional Patriot PAC-3 missiles and other weaponry.
“When it comes to missile defense, we rely on our friends. When it comes to defending against ballistic missiles, we rely almost exclusively on the United States,” Zelensky wrote in the letter.
He also noted that the pace of arms deliveries under the PURL (Priority Requirements List for Ukraine) program no longer matches the current threat level.
A source told the publication that Ukraine’s Ambassador to the U.S. Olha Stefanishyna sent similar appeals to the White House, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and members of Congress.
The PURL program was launched in August 2025 and involves NATO countries purchasing weapons for Ukraine and transferring them to Kyiv, without direct U.S. deliveries.
