Romania's Defense Ministry reported on Friday that a Russian drone entered its airspace and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building in the southeastern city of Galati, near the border with Ukraine.
The ministry stated that during the night of May 28-29, Russia resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, close to the river border with Romania. One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar to the southern part of Galati, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, triggering a fire.
The Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations announced on Facebook that the drone hit a 10th-floor apartment, starting a fire and lightly injuring two people. The drone's entire explosive payload detonated, prompting the evacuation of about 70 people. The fire was eventually extinguished.
Russia has repeatedly attacked the Ukrainian port of Reni on the Danube, near Galati. Russian drone debris has been recovered several times in the border area of Romania. Just a month ago, a Russian drone crashed in Galati, striking the outbuilding of a residential home with no injuries.
In a separate incident, a drone without an explosive charge was found near Baia Mare in northwestern Romania. The area was secured, and authorities are investigating the drone's origin and how it ended up there. The drone reportedly had a wingspan of about 3 meters (9.8 feet).
Meanwhile, local authorities in Ukraine's southern Odesa region announced on Telegram that drones struck the Izmail port area overnight. According to the post, one of the drones got stuck in power lines, temporarily cutting off electricity to five villages. Izmail, close to the Romanian border, is home to the largest Ukrainian port on the Danube River and is frequently targeted by Russia due to its strategic location.
