A massive explosion in northeastern Myanmar killed at least 40 people and injured around 70 others on Sunday, according to rescue workers. The blast occurred in the village of Kaungtup in Namhkam Township, about three kilometers south of the Chinese border, an area controlled by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic rebel group.

The death toll remains unclear, with estimates ranging from 40 to 59. The Associated Press cited rescuers reporting 40–46 dead, including children, while AFP sources put the figure at 46–59. Local media outlets, such as Shwe Phee Myay, reported 50–55 fatalities. The explosion damaged numerous residential buildings, and rescue teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble. Namhkam Hospital is facing an acute shortage of blood supplies.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that preliminary investigations indicate the blast occurred at a site where large quantities of mining explosives were stored. The TNLA confirmed on its Telegram channel that its economic department had stored gelignite for use in mining and stone quarrying. Gelignite can become highly unstable if improperly stored over time.

The TNLA expressed sympathy for the victims and announced a thorough investigation. The group is part of the rebel Three Brotherhood Alliance, which has been fighting for greater ethnic autonomy. The TNLA took control of the Namhkam area after launching a major offensive against the Myanmar military in late 2023. A ceasefire was signed in October 2024 following China-mediated talks, but tensions remain high.
