US President Donald Trump has reportedly clashed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over military action in Lebanon, jeopardizing Washington's diplomatic efforts with Iran. Tehran responded by threatening to suspend talks with the US, potentially derailing Trump's plan to end the unpopular war with Iran.
In an interview with the Pod Force One podcast, Trump confirmed he called Netanyahu "effing crazy" during a phone call. "I was a little bit perturbed at his constantly fighting with Lebanon," Trump said, though he added that he likes Netanyahu and works well with him.
The reported clash comes as Trump considers a deal to extend the US-Iran ceasefire and open negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane, is also at stake.
Experts warn that the call may reflect White House frustration over misaligned US and Israeli military goals. Former diplomat Brett Bruen said, "Netanyahu has a long history of doing his own dance, irrespective of what he has heard from Washington."
Public opinion in the US is turning against Israel. A Pew Research poll found that 60% of Americans now hold a negative view of Israel, up from 42% before the war with Hamas in 2023. Some conservative figures have criticized Israeli influence on US policy.
Observers suggest Trump may benefit from distancing himself from Netanyahu to appease domestic critics. "There is a political necessity now to create daylight between Israel and the US," Bruen added. The long-term impact on their relationship remains uncertain.
