Germany is preparing for a mix of high temperatures and thunderstorms on Friday, with hot air moving in from the southwest, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). Extreme heat warnings have been issued for large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as areas in Lower Saxony and Hesse.
In western and southwestern Germany, temperatures could reach up to 38 degrees Celsius (100°F). Thunderstorms and isolated showers are expected in the south later in the evening, with potential for heavy rain, hail, strong gusts, and severe weather in Baden and Swabia.
The DWD said conditions would ease overnight, though storm activity could continue in the west. In Bonn, temperatures are forecast to rise to 35°C (95°F).
Additionally, the North Bridge (Nordbrücke) in Bonn, one of the busiest crossings over the Rhine, will be closed to cars and trucks for the next two years.
