France's national weather service Météo-France has declared a red (maximum) alert for 49 out of 96 departments, covering Paris and the Île-de-France region. This is the first time such a high number of departments have been placed under the highest alert level simultaneously.

Temperatures in some areas could reach 42°C (107.6°F). Meteorologists warned that the heatwave is likely to continue or even intensify next week.

Additionally, an orange alert (the second-highest level) has been issued for 40 departments, and yellow alerts for seven more. This means heat warnings now cover the entire European territory of France.

Earlier, French Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that 845 schools would be closed due to the extreme heat. About 1,800 other schools will adjust their schedules, allowing students to finish classes and leave before noon.

Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable individuals. The heatwave is expected to break records and strain healthcare services.
