US President Donald Trump on Monday signed two executive orders aimed at advancing quantum computing and strengthening security infrastructure to protect data in a post-quantum world.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a call previewing the moves that a quantum computer could be developed by 2028. Quantum computing leverages quantum physics to solve complex problems many times faster than today's fastest computers.

The first order calls for the development of a quantum computer powerful enough for scientific research and instructs federal agencies to develop plans for deploying quantum-enabled technology. It also directs the Pentagon to deploy quantum-enabled sensors by 2027.

The second order aims to accelerate the migration to post-quantum cryptography in government and private sectors by 2031, ensuring systems can withstand future quantum attacks.

Quantum computing technology is still in early stages, with the US and China competing for dominance. Trump said at a signing ceremony: "We're going to be investing in American quantum leadership like never before to stay ahead of the pack. We're way ahead right now. We'll keep it that way."

Quantum computing poses significant cybersecurity risks due to its potential to break standard encryption. Companies like Google, IBM, and Microsoft are racing to build revolutionary supercomputers in the US.
