Australian police have released previously unseen photographs from the investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio 25 years ago.

Falconio, from Huddersfield, was shot on a remote highway near Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory on July 14, 2001. His body has never been found.

His killer, Bradley Murdoch, died of throat cancer in prison last year at age 67 without disclosing the location of Falconio's remains.

The images include a full-length picture of Murdoch staring at the camera, injuries sustained by Falconio's girlfriend Joanne Lees after the attack, and the orange Volkswagen Kombi van the couple was driving.

Police hope the photos may jog memories and lead to new information. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said 25 years is a "significant milestone" and that the release could prompt tips. "This was a traumatic event for Ms Lees and Peter's family, who have gone so long without answers," he said.

Murdoch was convicted of Falconio's murder by unanimous jury verdict in December 2005. He maintained his innocence and unsuccessfully appealed twice.

Days ago, police released bodycam footage of an interview with Murdoch a week before his death. A reward of up to A$500,000 is offered for information leading to the discovery of Falconio's remains.
