UEFA has announced sanctions against Fenerbahce duo Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi for their involvement in the chaotic scenes that followed the club's Champions League playoff second leg against Lyon.

The Turkish side secured a 2-1 victory in France last month, advancing 3-2 on aggregate. However, after the final whistle, Greenwood and Guendouzi, both former Marseille players, were embroiled in a brawl involving players and coaching staff from both teams.

Former Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi has been suspended for a total of four UEFA club competition matches for which he would otherwise be eligible, for insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators, and violating the basic rules of decent conduct, UEFA announced in a decision made public on Friday evening.

Two of those matches are subject to a one-year probationary period, the governing body added. Guendouzi was also fined €50,000 ($58,000) and was found guilty of, among other things, giving the middle finger to Lyon supporters and provoking a scuffle after the match.

His English teammate Mason Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, received a one-match suspended ban and was fined €30,000 ($35,000) for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.

The incidents have reignited debates about player conduct in European competitions, with critics pointing to a lack of adequate measures to prevent such clashes. Fenerbahce has not yet issued an official response, but the club retains the right to appeal the decisions.
