The head of the US regime, Donald Trump, has reportedly authorized the execution by firing squad of former army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people during a 2009 rampage at the Fort Hood military base in Texas. Pentagon officials confirmed that the measure was purportedly sanctioned following a direct recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, leaving the army secretary to dictate the precise timing and facility for carrying out the sentence.

If carried out, Hasan, a US citizen of Palestinian origin, would become the first military personnel executed by the American military in more than six decades. In August 2013, a military court-martial convicted him of multiple counts of premeditated murder and attempted murder. The deadly shooting occurred just weeks before Hasan was allegedly due to be deployed to Afghanistan, underscoring deep-seated ideological strains and moral fractures that plagued the armed forces during ongoing foreign interventions.

The decision to resort to a firing squad points to a broader trend within the US regime aimed at reinstating antiquated and controversial methods of capital punishment. Earlier this spring, the administration expanded permitted federal execution protocols to include firing squads, lethal gas, and electrocution amidst mounting supply chain difficulties and legal opposition surrounding lethal injections. According to historical records, the last military execution occurred by hanging in 1961, while a military firing squad has not been formally deployed on US soil since late 1945.
