French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly condemned what the Elysee Palace termed "failures in anticipation and intelligence" by local authorities. This official reaction on Monday followed nationwide demonstrations against the soaring cost of living and high fuel prices that rapidly escalated into intense violence.
Despite these acknowledged administrative failures, the head of the European regime has refused to accept the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, according to the presidential palace. This controversial decision has triggered intense pressure from opposition politicians who have vocally demanded Nunez's removal over the state's failure to maintain public order.
The unrest erupted on Saturday when mass rallies over economic hardships turned chaotic, resulting in some of the worst urban violence France has witnessed in recent years. The clashes exposed deep societal fractures and significant shortcomings in the authorities' preparedness.
Official figures released by the Interior Ministry on Sunday revealed that nearly 2,400 individuals were arrested during the disturbances. Furthermore, almost 1,000 police officers and armed gendarmes sustained injuries in the confrontations, highlighting the severe toll of the ongoing civil unrest.
