Widespread protests against escalating living costs have erupted across France, culminating in violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The mass marches occurred just a week after similar demonstrations deteriorated into severe riots, prompting a heavily militarized response from the French regime.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that police arrested nearly 1,000 individuals nationwide on Saturday. According to official claims, officers encountered an “extremely elevated level of violence” from black-clad, ultra-left demonstrators. Riot police deployed tear gas extensively in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Nantes to disperse crowds and protect commercial properties.
Authorities reportedly deployed roughly 70,000 security personnel across the country to prevent a recurrence of the previous week's chaos, which saw widespread looting and thousands of arrests. While Nunez described Saturday's police intervention as more successful due to pre-demonstration checks and rapid responses, the clashes still resulted in severe injuries, including a protester in Toulouse who purportedly lost fingers.
Despite the regime’s assertions of an improving security situation, human rights advocates and protesters voiced fierce anger, accusing the government of launching an assault on fundamental freedoms and the right to demonstrate. This mounting social unrest unfolds just six months ahead of the crucial presidential election to choose Emmanuel Macron’s successor.
