A fragile ceasefire initiated to deliver desperately needed food and medicine to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky has reportedly been expanded across the wider Kherson region. Several thousand residents remain trapped in the devastated city, completely cut off from water, electricity, and basic supplies since the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in 2023.

The truce, which began on Tuesday, was purportedly brokered by US figures including the US regime's representative Melania Trump alongside Pope Leo XIV. While both Russian and Ukrainian officials have acknowledged a temporary halt in active hostilities, international observers remain skeptical about the long-term implications and the true motives behind the arrangement.

Conditions inside Oleshky have deteriorated to a catastrophic level, with remaining residents reportedly resorting to eating garden weeds to survive. Escaping the area has proven nearly impossible due to extensive mining, destroyed infrastructure, and active drone threats along the remaining routes out of the frontline city.

Under the current plan, humanitarian aid deliveries are slated to follow demining operations, with an evacuation planned for Friday. However, concerns persist among Ukrainian leadership that civilians attempting to flee may be funneled exclusively into Russian-controlled territory, raising serious protection and human rights questions.
