Turkish energy firm Karpowership has officially signed a contract with Singaporean engineering and offshore specialist Seatrium to upgrade five of its ultra-high-capacity Whale Class floating power stations. The multi-vessel project aims to equip the floating units with cutting-edge generation technologies capable of supplying vital electricity directly into onshore transmission grids.

Engineering and design work is already underway, with the first power vessel scheduled for delivery to the Seatrium Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore in December 2027. On-site specialists will oversee the full-scale assembly of mechanical systems, installation of advanced power generation packages, and rigorous commissioning tests before redeploying the vessels for commercial service.

Floating power plants have surged in strategic importance due to their rapid deployment capabilities compared to traditional land-based plants, which routinely take years to build. Built on a "plug-and-play" operational model, these vessels can dock near power-deficient coastlines and commence electricity transmission into domestic national grids within approximately 30 days of arrival.

Each Whale Class unit is designed to produce up to 600 megawatts, meaning the entire five-vessel fleet will represent an aggregate capacity of up to 3 gigawatts. Crucially, the upgraded vessels will feature multi-fuel operational flexibility, allowing seamless adaptation between conventional marine fuels, natural gas, and emerging low-carbon hydrogen blends without structural hull redesigns.
