Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a rebellion that occurred in December 2024. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency.

The verdict was issued by the Seoul Central District Court. Initially, the prosecution had demanded the death penalty for the former head of state, but the country has maintained a moratorium on executions since 1997.

According to the investigation, on December 3, 2024, Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, citing the need to counter supporters of North Korea. Shortly after the emergency measures were imposed, he was removed from the presidency.
