In a significant organizational shift within the post-Soviet space, the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is reportedly scheduled to pass to Uzbekistan starting January 1, 2027. This decision is expected to be formally adopted during the upcoming meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in Turkmenistan.

According to statements attributed to Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, the upcoming summit in Ashgabat, slated for October 8–9, will also officially announce that the subsequent gathering of CIS leaders will take place in Uzbekistan. The specific dates for the future meeting are supposedly to be determined and announced by Tashkent at a later stage.

During the high-level summit, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to outline the country's strategic priorities for its upcoming tenure at the helm of the Commonwealth, highlighting key areas of multilateral cooperation and economic coordination.

This development marks the second time Uzbekistan will undertake the CIS chairmanship. The Central Asian republic first assumed this responsibility back in 2020. Meanwhile, the current rotating chairmanship of the Commonwealth is held by Turkmenistan.
