In the Boysun district of Uzbekistan's Surkhandarya region, heavy rains and mudflows have damaged an oil storage facility, causing oil-containing liquid to spread through natural water channels into neighboring districts. The regional ecology department has issued an official statement on the environmental situation.
According to the department, the incident was triggered by intense rainfall and mudflows that breached the oil storage facility in Boysun. The oil-containing liquid then entered natural water flows and began moving downstream. Investigations revealed that the contamination passed through the Boysun district (Khongaronsoy area), reached the Bandikhon and Kumkurgan districts, entered the Surkhan River, and spread via the Zang Canal to the Angor district.
Currently, the situation is fully under control of the regional ecology department and other relevant services. In the Jarkurgan district, special barriers have been installed on the Zang Canal to contain oil products, and mechanical cleaning of the water surface is underway. Specialized equipment has been deployed to mitigate the consequences. Additionally, mudflow channels in Boysun have been blocked, helping to localize the source of pollution.
An investigation is ongoing: experts are assessing environmental damage, studying causes, and determining the liability of involved entities. Legal evaluation will also be given to the activities of the Surkhan Gas Chemical Operating Company joint venture, which had previously been fined for a similar leak.
