Uzbek grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov concluded the TePe Sigeman Chess 2026 super tournament in Malmö, Sweden, undefeated and shared third place. Norwegian Magnus Carlsen emerged as the tournament winner.
Before the final round, Abdusattorov had theoretical chances for a playoff match for first place. To achieve this, he needed to defeat Dutch grandmaster Jorden van Foreest and hope for favorable results in other games.
However, the Abdusattorov-van Foreest encounter ended in a draw: his opponent surprised him with the Grünfeld Defense and then simplified the position to an equal endgame.
For Abdusattorov, this was his sixth consecutive draw after an opening win, although he could have snatched victories in games against Andy Woodward and Arjun Erigaisi. Despite not losing any game, he lost 2.6 rating points (his live rating stands at 2777.4).
Nevertheless, Chess.com notes that he remains Uzbekistan's top-ranked player (followed by Javohir Sindarov with 2776 points).
After seven rounds, he shared third place with 14-year-old Turkish player Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who missed a chance to beat Carlsen in the final round.
In the fight for first place, the games between Magnus Carlsen and Arjun Erigaisi were decisive. Erigaisi started the day as sole leader but drew a complex game against American Andy Woodward, avoiding defeat. Carlsen, meanwhile, converted his advantage in a prolonged game against Erdogmus. This tied their scores, leading to a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, the players first played two blitz games with a 3+2 time control. Carlsen won the first, Erigaisi the second. In the deciding game (first to win), the Norwegian played black, received an additional 30 seconds per the regulations, and ultimately won the game, match, and tournament.
The TePe Sigeman Chess tournament took place from May 1-7 in Malmö. Eight players competed in a round-robin format. Time control for classical games was 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move.
Notably, last year's winner was Javohir Sindarov, while in 2024, Nodirbek Abdusattorov claimed the title.
