On May 4, 2026, a tragic road accident occurred in Urgench, Uzbekistan, on the D-219 highway at the 13th kilometer. A 10-year-old boy, Uchqun Aminboyev, was struck by a BYD car traveling at high speed while crossing a pedestrian crossing with his grandmother. The boy died at the scene.

The boy's father, Anvarbek Masharipov, told Gazeta that the same location has seen three fatalities in the last two years, along with several injuries. He is calling for the installation of a traffic light to prevent further tragedies.

Masharipov explained that he and his wife were in Kazakhstan at the time, leaving their son in the care of his grandmother. During an evening walk, as they crossed the pedestrian crossing, a car appeared suddenly at high speed. The boy froze in fear and was hit. The driver rushed him to the hospital, but he was already dead.

According to the father, Uchqun was a bright, multilingual child who was loved by everyone in his school and neighborhood. The father wants the driver to face legal consequences but has refused any monetary compensation.

Zakir Ismoilov, press secretary of the Khorezm Regional Internal Affairs Department, stated that the road maintenance company had been notified for the third time about the need for a traffic light and promised to install it within a month. The Urgench road maintenance company reported that a traffic light was installed at a nearby intersection in 2025, and repairs and traffic light installation on the 10-15 km section of the D-219 highway are planned for the third and fourth quarters of 2026.

The father appealed to all drivers to be vigilant and reduce speed on the roads. He also highlighted that there are thousands of unregulated pedestrian crossings in Khorezm, and ensuring children's safety is the responsibility of local authorities.
