On May 4, 2026, a tragic accident occurred at a pedestrian crossing on the D-219 highway near Urganch, Uzbekistan. A 10-year-old boy, Uchqun Aminboyev, was crossing the street with his grandmother when he was struck by a BYD car traveling at high speed. The child died at the scene from his injuries.
The boy's father, Anvarbek Masharipov, appealed to Gazeta news outlet, highlighting that three people had died at the same crossing in the past two years, and many others had been injured. He urged authorities to install a traffic light. The very next day after the article was published, on May 13, installation began.
The traffic light was tested on May 22 and then turned off, before becoming fully operational on June 1. It was installed jointly by the Urganch Road Maintenance Authority and the Khorezm Regional Traffic Police.
Masharipov expressed concern that the case against the driver might be dropped. 'I fear some people may interfere and the case will be closed,' he said.
According to Zokir Ismoilov, press secretary of the Khorezm Regional Internal Affairs Directorate, a criminal case has been opened against the driver under Article 266, Part 2 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic safety rules resulting in death). The driver is in custody. Investigators are awaiting expert reports, and the case is expected to be sent to court next week. The father is in daily contact with the investigator.
Gazeta continues to document stories of children killed or injured in road accidents to raise awareness and improve road safety.
