A former police officer in Uzbekistan has been sentenced to seven years in prison for hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk and then dumping the body in a canal to cover up the crime, according to the TV program "Zamon."
The defendant, identified as D.N., born in 1989, was an operative detective in the criminal investigation department of the Bekabad city police. In court, he claimed he pressed the brakes upon seeing the pedestrian but could not avoid the collision. Reports indicate he was driving a Nexia while intoxicated.
After the accident, he loaded the victim into his car and headed to the hospital, but changed his mind en route and decided to conceal the crime. During the investigation, the ex-officer stated that when he realized the pedestrian was not breathing, he panicked and threw the body into a canal. He also said he later voluntarily reported to the Bekabad police and confessed. He expressed remorse, promised to help the victim's family after serving his sentence, and asked for leniency.
The court found him guilty under Part 2 of Article 266 (Violation of traffic safety rules resulting in death) and Article 134 (Desecration of a grave). He was sentenced to 7 years in prison and banned from driving for 3 years.
The incident occurred on December 11, 2025, on the Buka-Bekabad highway, where the officer struck a 43-year-old man. To hide the crime, he and his wife drove the body about 35-40 kilometers away and dumped it into the Farkhod canal. The victim's body was found only 80 days later.
