The Tashkent city administration has approved a major renovation of the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater building, according to a decree signed by Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov on June 25.
A total of 1.87 billion soums from the Tashkent City Development Fund will be allocated for the complete overhaul of the theater building and the improvement of the surrounding area.
The engineering company “Yagona buyurtmachi xizmati” under the Tashkent city administration has been designated as the project contractor.
The theater's history dates back to 1914, when Abdulla Avloni founded the “Turon” theater troupe. In 1929, the theater was named after Hamza, and in 1933 it was granted academic status. By a presidential decree of September 21, 2001, the theater was renamed the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater.
In April, Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the presidential administration, visited several Tashkent theaters in need of reconstruction and announced she would personally oversee the renovation efforts.
