Unemployment in Uzbekistan's Surxondaryo region fell to 4.8% in the first quarter of 2025, according to a Senate meeting chaired by Senate Chairperson Tanzila Narbayeva in Termez. However, some districts failed to fully meet employment targets.
Over five months, 18,000 people were placed in permanent jobs, 195,000 were covered by income-boosting programs, and 24,000 informal workers legalized their employment.
Despite overall progress, certain districts underperformed in job creation, and projects in services, maintenance, and construction were insufficiently implemented.
The number of active business entities increased by 8.7% to 21,500, and about 900 jobs were created through 77 investment projects.
Gross regional product reached 13.4 trillion soums in Q1, growing 9.1%. Industrial output rose 8.7%, market services 16.3%, and agriculture 9.7%.
Senators noted shortcomings: production declined at six large industrial enterprises; localization projects in Boysun, Jarqo‘rg‘on, and Sho‘rchi districts were delayed; and non-performing loans increased in Angor, Qumqo‘rg‘on, and Termiz districts.
Senators proposed accelerating investment projects, improving industrial zone efficiency, boosting exports, and strengthening business support.
