A scandal has erupted in the Andijan region of Uzbekistan surrounding the 'Gamhorlik' center for children with disabilities, located in the Kurghontepa district. The trigger for an official inspection was video footage that spread on social media on August 31, allegedly showing physical and psychological abuse of the center's wards.

Specialists from the regional department of the National Social Protection Agency conducted an investigation into the published materials. As a result, employment contracts were terminated with six educators and one nurse. The personnel decisions also affected the management team — officials who allegedly failed to ensure proper oversight of the staff's work were brought to disciplinary responsibility.

To guarantee the children's safety, the institution has implemented a set of additional measures. All wards were examined by doctors from the territorial medical association, and new CCTV cameras were installed on the playgrounds and throughout the center's premises.

The 'Gamhorlik' centers were established on the basis of former 'Muruvvat' boarding homes during a large-scale reform of the social protection system. Currently, the competent authorities are continuing to clarify all the circumstances of the incident based on official requests.
