Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reviewed the key parameters of a new international airport project planned for construction in the Tashkent region, according to the presidential press service. The first phase of the project includes building a passenger terminal covering 208.4 thousand square meters (20.8 hectares) and two runways, each 4 kilometers long. This aims to establish a large-scale and modern infrastructure for the new airport, addressing future aviation needs.

The president was also briefed on the survey work being conducted at the future airport site and the subsequent stages of project implementation. The existing Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport also features two runways approximately 4 kilometers each, allowing for unrestricted handling of long-haul aircraft. Other airports in the country typically have a single runway ranging from 1.6 to 3.3 kilometers in length, which is considered sufficient for most domestic and international flights.

Plans are in place to merge the arrival and departure halls of the current airport into a unified terminal complex, increasing its total area by over 10,000 square meters and boosting capacity to 2,400 passengers per hour. The new "New Tashkent" international airport will be constructed in the O‘rta Chirchiq and Quyi Chirchiq districts of the Tashkent region, covering 1,300 hectares, with the president having launched construction in October 2025.

The decision to build the new airport was made in response to projections that passenger flow to the capital will triple over the next eight years, reaching 9 million people annually, and exceed 24 million by 2040. The current airport, designed for 11 million passengers and located within the city, may struggle to meet future demand. The project is being implemented through a public-private partnership, with a consortium involving various companies.

The project has been developed in four phases, with the first phase costing $2.5 billion and encompassing the construction of the airport terminal and airfield. Upon completion, the new airport will be capable of handling up to 20 million passengers and 129,000 tons of cargo annually, conducting up to 30 takeoffs and landings per hour, and simultaneously accommodating 62 aircraft. The airport complex will be directly connected to the Tashkent-Samarkand, Tashkent-Andijan, and Tashkent-Bo‘stonliq highways, and a railway station for high-speed trains will be built, along with bus services between the centers of Tashkent and New Tashkent.
