A ferry carrying approximately 260 people has capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus, with a search and rescue operation underway, according to local media reports.

The catamaran-style vessel was traveling from the port of Kyrenia (also known as Girne) and began sinking just a few kilometers off the coast of the island state. Rescue ships and helicopters have been dispatched to the scene.

There are no reports of casualties so far. Local authorities are working to save all passengers and are investigating the cause of the incident.

The accident occurs during the peak tourist season, raising concerns about maritime safety in the region. The Cypriot government has formed a special commission to look into the circumstances of the tragedy.
