Germany was hit by severe summer storms overnight, causing widespread flooding, injuries, and evacuations. The western state of Rhineland-Palatinate experienced major flooding due to heavy rain, with roads and buildings submerged.
In southwestern Rastatt, lightning struck a sports festival, injuring nine people, six of them seriously. The victims were hospitalized, but none are in life-threatening condition.
Near Flensburg in northern Schleswig-Holstein, storms injured 13 people and forced the evacuation of around 5,000 attendees from an outdoor music festival in Viöl.
In Munich, a freight train derailed, leaving one person seriously injured. Two cars fell off a bridge and came to rest wedged between the bridge and the road below. Deutsche Bahn said no disruptions to passenger services are expected.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued severe weather warnings for southern and western parts of the country, forecasting thunderstorms and high winds as summer temperatures rise.
