A militant from Uzbekistan has been killed in Syria's Idlib province, according to local sources. The incident occurred in the Al-Fua area, where unknown assailants opened fire on the Uzbek national's vehicle, resulting in his death at the scene.
An investigation is currently underway. The deceased was reportedly a member of the “Red Brigades,” which are part of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group.
In late November 2024, armed rebels, primarily composed of HTS fighters, launched a large-scale offensive in northern Syria. They seized control of Idlib province, the city of Aleppo, and parts of Hama and Homs provinces, before entering the capital Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad and his family fled to Russia. By 2025, HTS leader Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Muhammad al-Julani) was declared interim president of Syria.
That same year, Syrian security forces conducted a series of raids in Idlib targeting foreigners, including militants from Uzbekistan. In June 2025, Syrian security detained a military instructor known as Abu Dujan al-Uzbeki and took him to an unknown location. In late August, another Uzbek citizen, Islam al-Uzbeki, was captured in a raid in the Al-Qusur area based on operational intelligence.
Additionally, on September 3, 2025, Syrian security forces eliminated an ISIS cell in the Haram area west of Idlib, with detainees including individuals from Iraq and Uzbekistan.
