One of the most anticipated clashes of the 2026 World Cup round of 16 takes place at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 5, as Brazil face Norway. The match kicks off at 4pm local time (20:00 GMT), with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
Brazil have never beaten Norway in four previous meetings, recording two losses and two draws. Norway famously defeated Brazil 2-1 in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup. Carlo Ancelotti's side will be desperate to end this unwanted streak against a team that holds a unique psychological edge.
Brazil topped Group C with wins over Scotland and Haiti, and a draw with Morocco. They came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in the last 32. Vinicius Junior has been the standout performer, scoring four goals and becoming the first Brazilian since Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002 to score in all three group matches. His form will be crucial.
Norway finished second in Group I, beating Iraq and Senegal, but losing to France. They secured a late 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the last 32, their first World Cup knockout win since 1938. Erling Haaland has scored five of Norway's ten tournament goals, making his World Cup debut in spectacular fashion.
Norway coach Stale Solbakken said: “Brazil are favourites, of course they are, but we are hopeful that we will give them a match, and we are not playing the game for fun – we are playing to win the game and to reach the quarterfinals. It’s possible, but it’s very difficult.”
According to the Opta supercomputer, Brazil have a 53.6% chance of winning in regulation time, Norway 22.4%, with a 24% probability of extra time. The winner will face either Mexico or England in the quarterfinals in Miami on July 11.
Brazil will be without Lucas Paqueta due to a hamstring injury, while Raphinha has resumed individual training after a similar issue and could be on the bench. Norway's Julian Ryerson is out with a thigh injury.
