As hundreds of millions of students return to school for the new academic year, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the learning landscape. Teachers and students alike are grappling with a fundamental question: what is the purpose of homework when an AI chatbot can complete it in seconds?
Some countries have moved swiftly to embrace AI in education. China mandates at least eight hours of AI instruction annually, while the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar have begun integrating AI into their curricula. These initiatives aim to prepare students for a tech-driven future, but the unintended consequences are becoming increasingly apparent.
A landmark study led by David Stromberg of Stockholm University, along with Victor Lei and Yanhui Wu of the University of Hong Kong, tracked approximately 27,000 students aged 12 to 18 in China over 30 months. The findings reveal a striking gap between completing schoolwork and actually learning from it. After adopting generative AI tools, students' homework scores rose by 18%, while the time spent on each assignment fell by about 30%, from 64 to 45 minutes on average.
However, the same students saw their scores drop by 20% on monthly closed-book exams taken without AI assistance within six months. Performance on high-stakes entrance exams also declined, with the full negative effect emerging over a longer period. This suggests that while AI can make task completion more efficient, it may be short-circuiting the cognitive processes essential for deep learning.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reached a similar conclusion in its Digital Education Outlook 2026. The report warns that when generative AI is neither designed for teaching nor used under structured guidance, outsourcing tasks to the model leads to improved performance without real learning gains. Researchers like Dragan Gasevic describe this phenomenon as "metacognitive laziness," where students' ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning erodes.
How students use AI tools matters more than whether they use them. A survey by Ipsos for the Vodafone Foundation, involving 7,000 students aged 12-17 across seven European countries, found that 56% use AI to get information, 45% to have concepts explained, and 31% to obtain complete solutions to tasks. Only 20% use AI to create personalized learning plans or track their progress, indicating a reliance on AI for quick answers rather than deeper understanding.
Beyond academics, AI is becoming intertwined with the broader student experience. A UK survey of over 1,000 undergraduates found that 49% believe AI has improved their student life, citing time savings and instant support. Interestingly, when asked about loneliness, 59% said AI made no difference, while 21% felt less lonely and 20% felt more isolated. As AI continues to permeate education, striking a balance between leveraging its benefits and preserving genuine learning remains a critical challenge for educators and policymakers worldwide.
