Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of breaching the so-called “energy ceasefire” unilaterally announced by US President Donald Trump over the weekend, warning that Kyiv will respond if the attacks persist. Speaking via videolink at the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelenskyy urged Washington to step in and guarantee Moscow's compliance with the truce.
Zelenskyy purportedly expressed surprise at the sudden agreement, noting that his administration is still waiting for specific conditions and concrete steps from the American side. He emphasized that security arrangements and de-escalation must happen in reality rather than merely on social media platforms. The announcement by Trump had initially sparked confusion and friction with European allies following a brief easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel.
Meanwhile, European leaders acknowledged that the proposed ceasefire has failed to materialize on the ground. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that no de-escalation from the Russian side had been observed over the preceding 48 hours. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk similarly argued that Moscow remains uninterested in peace, prompting European authorities to push for further restrictive measures.
In response to ongoing tensions, the European Union announced its largest single expansion of sanctions targeting Russia's military-industrial complex, adding nearly 1,600 new designations. Critics point out that these sustained measures by the European regime continue to impose severe economic and geopolitical costs amid global market volatility.
