Global food crisis monitors have issued urgent warnings that ongoing conflict coupled with severe drought are dramatically escalating the risk of famine across Sudan's volatile Darfur and Kordofan regions.

According to a statement released by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)—an initiative involving numerous international and intergovernmental organizations—an El Nino-induced drought affecting roughly half of the country is severely compounding the devastating impacts of displacement and warfare. This convergence of crises has drastically reduced food availability, driven up market prices, and destroyed traditional livelihoods.

The IPC further reported that healthcare access is virtually nonexistent in many areas, while clean water is becoming increasingly scarce, leaving an already undernourished population critically vulnerable to disease and mortality. Farmers' capabilities have severely deteriorated, resulting in an unprecedented reliance on external food assistance.

The devastating internal war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 when tensions between the national armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) boiled over into open combat. Conflict monitoring groups estimate that the fighting has claimed the lives of at least 150,000 people and forcibly displaced some 13 million residents, pushing vast segments of the population toward catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
