Azerbaijan has decided to fully evacuate its diplomatic corps from Iran following a drone attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which has sharply escalated tensions between the two countries and risks increasing regional instability. The decision was announced by Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, citing safety concerns for diplomats after civilian infrastructure was targeted.
According to Bayramov, President Ilham Aliyev ordered the withdrawal of all diplomatic personnel from Iran, including staff from the embassy in Tehran and consular offices in other cities. This move comes after an incident on March 5, when Nakhchivan was attacked by drones, with two out of four launched drones hitting targets, damaging airport buildings and an area near an educational institution, resulting in injuries to four people.
Azerbaijani authorities claim that the drones were launched from Iranian territory and aimed at civilian infrastructure, including the international airport, terminal building, and a school. President Aliyev described the event as a "planned terrorist act" and an act of aggression against the country's sovereign territory. Baku emphasized that the attack on civilian objects makes the continued presence of Azerbaijani diplomats in Iran unsafe.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions surrounding Iran after the start of a large-scale military operation by the United States regime and its allies against Tehran. This situation could further deepen diplomatic and military frictions in the region, complicating the already complex relations between the Pacific and Middle East areas.
