Severe storm systems tore through the central United States on Friday and Saturday, leaving behind a trail of devastation and multiple fatalities. Rescue teams are actively searching for survivors and providing assistance to those affected by the extreme weather events.

According to preliminary reports, eight people have been killed due to the violent conditions. Four fatalities were reported in Oklahoma, with another four in the state of Michigan. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt posted on X, stating: "Severe weather struck Major County last night and tragically claimed the lives of a mother and daughter."

Michigan's Branch County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a tornado touched down near the community of Union City in the southern part of the state on Friday, resulting in three deaths and 12 injuries. In a statement, the office expressed: "Our thoughts are with those who have lost family, friends, and property during this incident."

Approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of that location, a tornado reportedly hit Cass County, where officials said one person was killed and over 500 residents were left without power. On Saturday, rescuers combed through rubble in search of survivors, while authorities began the arduous task of cleaning up scattered debris across the impacted areas.

Disaster relief workers conducted door-to-door visits in the Union City and Three Rivers areas to distribute meals and offer other forms of aid, as per state officials. Lonnie Fisher of the National Weather Service (NWS) indicated on Saturday that the severe thunderstorms originated in the neighboring state of Indiana, which likely spawned multiple tornadoes into southern Michigan.

Fisher remarked, "Mostly likely there were three distinct tornadoes, but we won't know 100% for sure until they finish the survey," adding that the agency dispatched teams to the region to assess damage and confirm tornado occurrences. Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated a state emergency operations center "to coordinate an all-hands-on-deck response to severe weather in southwestern Michigan."

The NWS forecasted strong storms and flash flood risks on Saturday, extending from the midwestern Great Lakes region down to Texas. Spring storms are a typical occurrence in this area during what is commonly referred to as tornado season, which generally commences at varying times across different parts of the US. Tornadoes can form unexpectedly and within minutes, often leaving individuals with minimal warning to seek shelter.
