A shooting occurred at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA, on Thursday morning, leaving two people hospitalized in critical condition. The university administration reported that the gunfire began around 10:49 AM local time in Constant Hall, which houses the institution's business college.

Authorities stated that the gunman was dead, but his identity and the circumstances of his death have not yet been disclosed. The motive for the attack remains unclear. Hospital officials confirmed that the two victims are in critical condition.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced on social media platform X that it had agents on scene supporting the investigation. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger also indicated that she was monitoring the situation and maintaining close contact with local emergency responders.

The active threat on campus has been neutralized, and classes were canceled for the remainder of Thursday. This incident is yet another example of the persistently high level of gun violence in the United States, where such events frequently occur at schools and universities. According to the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 19 instances of gunfire on campuses since the start of 2026.

The Trace news site, which tracks gun violence, noted that shootings—excluding suicides—have declined in recent years after spiking during the COVID-19 pandemic, but 110 people were shot per day in the US in 2025. In December, two people were killed in a shooting at Brown University, and earlier that month, one person was killed at Kentucky State University.
