President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has tasked the modernization of railway rolling stock and the expansion of wagon manufacturing capacities. At a meeting held on Wednesday, February 25, the results of projects in the production of freight and passenger wagons were reviewed, and plans for the near future were outlined.
According to the presidential press service, 1,590 semi-open freight wagons were produced in 2023-2025 under a $105 million project. This has strengthened logistics chains and increased freight turnover.
A second phase worth $150 million is currently being implemented for 2025-2026. It involves the production of 954 freight and 70 passenger wagons, as well as the modernization of specialized enterprises.
To date, 45 passenger wagons and 340 tank cars have been manufactured. By the end of the year, an additional 614 freight and 25 passenger wagons are planned to be produced.
To further accelerate the pace, a separate decree has been signed, providing for an additional $100 million to supply 1,350 freight wagons. The head of state instructed to increase industrial capacities by one and a half times to reach production of two thousand freight wagons this year, and also gave directives on modernizing the wagon fleet and optimizing costs.
Previously, it was reported that Uzbekistan's passenger train fleet is set for a major modernization through significant credit financing. The Reconstruction and Development Fund will allocate $143 million to Uzbekistan Railways for the renewal of 200 passenger wagons.
