Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has called on world leaders to support Kyrgyzstan's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council during the election scheduled for June 3, 2026, in New York. The appeal was published on his official Facebook page.
In his address, Japarov emphasized that the insufficient representation of small, developing, and landlocked states in the Council “undermines the stability of the entire collective security architecture.” He argued that ensuring representation from diverse groups in this UN body is “not a political preference but an objective necessity.”
“The election of Kyrgyzstan will be proof that the international community has the political will to restore historical justice and ensure equal rights for all countries in elections to the leading UN body,” the statement read.
The president expressed confidence that, if elected, Kyrgyzstan would continue to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the Security Council's work and make a worthy contribution to collective international efforts to address global risks and threats.
Japarov stated that Kyrgyzstan is not bound by any bloc obligations and is not involved in “conflictual geopolitical configurations.” He also added that Bishkek opposes “the practice of double standards” and the use of the Security Council “for narrow interests.”
“This allows us to take a balanced, independent, and pragmatic position aimed at reducing polarization and restoring functional dialogue within the Security Council… If elected, the Kyrgyz Republic will act in the Council as an advocate for pragmatic, depoliticized, and sustainable decisions,” the appeal said.
The president also noted that Kyrgyzstan pursues a consistent foreign policy based on the principles of complete renunciation of weapons of mass destruction. He added that Kyrgyzstan's candidacy is unanimously supported by Central Asian states and reaffirmed the country's readiness to present a “coordinated and responsible position that takes into account the interests of a wide range of countries” in the UN Security Council.
