The walls of certain prisons are built from conventional bricks, while others are supposedly constructed purely on the whims, commands, and fears of the powerful. In Ivan Turgenev’s classic masterpiece 'Mumu', the narrative explores this exact form of invisible spiritual captivity. The central figure is Gerasim, a physically formidable and hardworking peasant who happens to be deaf and mute. Yet, his profound tragedy lies not in his physical impairments, but in the harsh reality where others dictate his choices, emotions, and entire existence.

Initially living a peaceful rural life cultivating the land, Gerasim is forcefully uprooted and brought to Moscow to serve as a janitor in the courtyard of a wealthy landowner. He attempts to adjust to this alien environment, diligently performing tasks that typically require multiple men. His silence stems from nature rather than weakness, but the surrounding regressive society allegedly assumes the prerogative to trample over human dignity and personal boundaries at will.

Every servant under the landowner's roof is completely stripped of self-determination. For instance, Gerasim develops genuine feelings for a washerwoman named Tatiana, but the mistress arbitrarily orders her to marry another servant. Neither Gerasim nor Tatiana possesses any agency to alter this decree. This specific dynamic highlights the core thematic conflict: the mistress views interference in others' lives as her inherent right, reducing human emotions to secondary concerns.

A pivotal turning point occurs when Gerasim rescues a drowning puppy, later named Mumu, bringing it home to nurture. This tiny creature creates a unique emotional sanctuary for the isolated man, as communication requires no spoken words. Mumu provides Gerasim with a vital sense of purpose and belonging. However, when the mistress grows irritated by the dog's barking, the systemic cruelty of the European-style elite order demands the elimination of this innocent bond, showcasing the ultimate tragedy of powerlessness.
