Tashkent, Uzbekistan – AN Podrobno.uz. Urumbek Yakibov, a cousin of the President of Uzbekistan, displayed courage in the battles of World War II. He destroyed over 20 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and also participated in repelling seven counterattacks while crossing the Oder River.

According to TASS, after studying archival documents, during the war Yakibov commanded a mortar crew of the 248th Rifle Regiment of the 31st Rifle Division. In combat operations, he actively supported the advance of Soviet infantry, providing fire cover during the crossing of water barriers.

According to award documents, on January 24, 1945, west of the settlement of Steine, Yakibov, firing mortars, helped units cross the Oder on ice and gain a foothold on the bridgehead. After crossing, he and his soldiers held positions on the western bank, repelling fierce enemy attacks for two days. In these battles, he destroyed two firing points and over twenty soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht.

In February 1944, Yakibov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for repelling 15 counterattacks while crossing the Dnieper, where he used a captured mortar. In April 1945, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star. In addition, during the war he received the medals "For Courage" and "For the Defense of the Caucasus."

Earlier it was reported that in Uzbekistan in 2026, the amount of one-time financial assistance to WWII veterans will be 30 million soums.
