A video circulated on social media showing a group dismantling brickwork at the Kukeldash Madrasah, located in Bukhara's historic Labi-Hauz district. The Bukhara Regional Cultural Heritage Department issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The madrasah, built in the second half of the 16th century, is reported to be one of Bukhara's ancient and unique architectural monuments. For nearly five centuries, students studied and resided here. Since the early 20th century, educational activities ceased, and the building has been used as a museum.
According to officials, over time, natural factors and technogenic processes have caused serious cracks and damage in the monument's northern walls, with some parts becoming hazardous. As the area is frequented by many locals and tourists, safety measures were deemed necessary.
In response, restoration and repair work is currently underway on the hazardous sections, involving specialists from the Bukhara Regional Restoration Center. Department representatives stated that the process preserves the monument's historical appearance.
It is noted that Bukhara's old city area is a historically protected site at the international level and is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. The building is considered the largest madrasah not only in Bukhara but in all of Central Asia by size and scale.
The Cultural Heritage Department urged citizens to contact officials formally for additional questions about the restoration processes.
